If XP is new to this one, my first thought is that it has encountered a hardware issue that it cannot handle and this can cause it to hang. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. Try XP again: if you eliminated the extra hardware it should be able to complete the install. What I would do is remove all cards from the PC except video, disable all on board features such as sound, LAN, etc., and try again.

It might be a motherboard device or some such. I say that because I have seen modern machines that refuse to take a copy of XP. Don't format the drive with DOS. Please check yours against these.
A typical setup would look something like this: Primary, IDE1 = HD1 (boot drive) jumpered as Master, on end of cable, DVD jumpered as Slave, on middle connector of cable.
