I found my issue was being caused because I was making changes to the model and when I re-ran the app, I would get this error.

So I have now recreated the solution and projects for this particular application, and it is working. It's the dialogue.cshtml view which is thowing the error, presumably it is the controller though that is really throwing the error. Recreating the solution from scratch fixed the problem. I made a copy of the project and made small changes (removing something each time) and rebuilt each time.
