Same error again. Thanks! –jwbensley Oct 11 '12 at 16:53 1 ifdown is a high-level program which does a lot of thing that you might need. I finally got around to doing that, and the VPS won't come back onto the network. Just tested it and it worked perfectly.

The problem happens because in Ubuntu /etc/init.d/networking is a symlink to upstart. I am afraid to reboot my backup OMV box now since I expect that it will have the same problem again. The fix i applied which was adding the following into /etc/init.d/networking [ -d /var/run/network ] || mkdir -p /var/run/network This checks if the dir exists and creates it if it doesn't.
