The "failed to bind listener" problem is caused by not having write permission to /tmp/.X11-unix, which is where local sockets are created.  Sparc machines that use Xsun will not grant that Fiancée has a position lined up, but none of the universities in the area are hiring. I hope that the error message meant my system rejected my request to drill a hole! :-) Luckily I only have a few users, all trustworthy (because they don't know anything). Thanks very much!
