I tried the various options that were available at the boot log in screen, and the Safe Mode was the only one that seemed to work.After logging in Safe Mode, a my laptop is doing the same thing and I was wondering if you fixed it. After the update was complete it was 'screaming' out for a reboot, as I was on my desktop at the time I thought I'd let it reboot.Went through the usual tasks, Vista isn't even offering to freeze, and I bet I don't have the black screen issue when I reboot either. I was working on my toshiba portege laptop transferring some photo on a usb drive. I installed a new interal bluetooth module on a Dell Inspiron 1720. When microsoft installed the nvidia drivers again...i went into device manager and picked an older driver.

I had that problem too and this solves it. Perhaps a better aproach it to boot into the command mode, but execute services.msc, and disable only Defender. Not only it's slow. Hope I will get a solution from you ( EXPERT).

When I tryied to open Network Connections, the window didn´t load. I checked the Winlogon\Shell key as described above from Vista RE (can access it from the F8 menu on this Vista install); it's set to Explorer. As it turns out, I couldn't use my rich text in my Yahoo accounts with Google Chrome...that's why I then switched to FireFox.
